Meeting Notes – October 19, 2019
The Club at Prescott Lakes – Fairway and Falls Rooms
The Meeting was called to order by President Jim Robak at 1:00 p.m. with over 50 members attending.
Welcome: Jim Robak thanked those in attendance for coming, especially the new members who were attending. He then introduced the current Board of Directors, and the Committee Chairs for 2019. He pointed out that it is due to the large number of volunteers, that our Club functions so well.
Election of Board members: Jim Robak reviewed the names of the candidates for office. Ballots were distributed, collected and counted by the Election Committee, chaired by Wanda Hughs.
Membership Report: Secretary Genanne Davis reported that we have had a 33% increase in membership since January, with the current membership at 250. The greatest increase is in the 1.5-2.5 rating level.
Displaying data collected at the Front Desk through September 30, 2019, it was pointed out that Pickleball continues to rank #7 is usage, same as last year at this time. Genanne encouraged everyone to check in at the desk every time they use the courts.
Club Shirts: Jim Robak thanked Sue Westbury for so ably handling the Pickleball Club Shirt orders this year. A show of hands was requested to indicate further interest in Pickleball Club Shirts. There was enough interest to look into another order.
Budget Report: Treasurer Ron Scott discussed the budget as of October 1, 2019. Total income is above projections and total expenses are below projections, with some bills still outstanding, The resulting actual funds available is above projections at $6,540. He explained we had a larger than anticipated increase in members, and some unbudgeted expenses.
Ratings Committee: Committee Chair Joe Nelson stated that in the 3rd year of the program there are currently over 160 members with ratings. He outlined how to get an initial club rating with self-rating. He further described how members my move up or down in club ratings using the “Challenge Up” process. In additions, Joe explained how using Round Robins may qualify a player to move up. Since the October, 2018, General Meeting, 24 Pickleball Club members have successfully “challenged up.”
Round Robins Committee: Vice President Jim Slack reported the Pickleball Club is holding Round Robins from January through December. Four round robins a month are held—one for each skill level (2.0/2.5, 3.0, 3.5, 4.0+). Statistics are tracked by Jim Slack. He recognized the volunteers who work as a team to run the Round Robins.
Social Tournaments: Jim Robak described social tournaments as a place to have fun. Each had a different format with players of differing abilities playing together to encourage camaraderie. The 2019 tournaments were Valentine Top Hat, February 9; DinkFest, May 18; 3D. July 13; Sunset Champagne Pickleball Poker, October 5; and still to come, DinkFest2, November 23.
2019 Member Skill Level Tournament: Tournaments committee member Jay Davis reported the Pickleball Club held its annual Skill-Level tournament June 14, 15, and 16, with 59 members participating, an increase over 2018. Events included Women’s Doubles, Men’s Doubles, and Mixed Doubles, with players competing in four different levels: 2.0/2.5, 3.0, 3.5, and 4.0+. The committee anticipates the tournament will become the signature event for the Pickleball Club.
Prescott Lakes Senior Pickleball Tournament: Jay Davis reported the Senior Tournament, held August 16, 17, and 18, continued and enhanced our reputation as one of the best pickleball tournaments around. This year’s tournament combined age and rating, resulting in 185 players. He stated we at just about at the maximum we can accommodate with the current number of courts. Twenty-five PLPC members participated, taking a total of 12 medals. Again this year the Club at Prescott Lakes offered complimentary lunch from Café Splash to volunteers, which was greatly appreciated. In 2020, the Senior Tournament will have a paid medical professional on site.
2019 Club Championship: Jay Davis described the purpose of the Club Championship is to acknowledge the best of the best. This year’s tournament was held September 20, 21, and 22, with 54 players vying in Men’s Singles, Women’s Singles, Men’s Doubles, Women’s Doubles and Mixed Doubles. The names of winners in each event are displayed on the Pickleball Club Permanent Plaque in the Athletic Center.
PLPC Referee Training: Jim Robak reported that thanks to Randy Oaks, a PLPC member and USAPA certified referee, for the 2nd year the Pickleball Club held training for PLPC Certified Referees. It required applicants to pass a rigorous on-line test and be observed in actual game situations. The program resulted in cadre of PLPC certified referees. In additions, the Club offered Line Judge training to create teams of Line Judges to work as a team at tournaments. He spoke of the benefits of the Club having its own referees and line judges.
Lessons: Lessons Chair Frank Klejmont, explained that a dedicated group of instructors taught 318 lessons to 112 students from April through October. Frank managed a schedule with each level (Beginner, Novice, and Intermediate) being taught once a month. Class size was limited to 12 to allow a 4:1 student/teacher ratio. The curriculum was standardized so that students were working on the same skills regardless of the instructor.
Play Schedule: Joe Nelson described the process that produced the play schedule we are now using. Introduced in July, 2018, and updated in August 2018, the current schedule is working well. The Play Schedule and Play Rules are posted at the courts and the web site.
Social Committee: Committee Chair Betty Remlinger emphasized the purpose of the events planned by the Social Committee is to have fun. Club members and their guests are welcome at all social events. Three events this year included an mixer at Gurley Street Grille, a Party on the Terrace at the Club at Prescott Lakes, a Pickleball Club Pot Luck and Thumb Butte. The 2020 Social Committee will need new members.
Court Etiquette: Rob Rudman urges players that just as they bring their own paddle to the courts, they also need to bring their own ball to the court. Secondly, if three people are waiting to play and a fourth person shows up, the newcomer should join in to make a foursome instead of waiting for more players to show up. Thirdly, encourage new comers to play with better players to learn, the same as we all started in the past.
2019 Board Expectations and Goals: Jim Robak enumerated the Board goals as follows:
fun, increase membership, board involvement with listening and action, professionalism and accountability, social events and tournaments, and clinics. He praised the current members for their diligence and professionalism.
