Meeting Minutes – April 10, 2018
The Club at Prescott Lakes – Falls and Fairway Rooms
The Meeting opened with President Jim Robak welcoming the approximately 60 members in attendance. He introduced special guest Merlin Dressel, who had new Topp pickleball paddles available for purchase. The current Board of Directors and committee chairs were then introduced.
Membership: Secretary Genanne Davis reported our current membership is at 185, which is a 35% increase over the same time in 2017. She explained that membership applications, including a place to order name tags, are available in a mailbox on Court 1. Current members who want to order additional name tags may use the form for that purpose.
Displaying data collected at the Front Desk through February, 2018, which showed Pickleball ranking #5 in usage, Genanne encouraged everyone to check in at the Front Desk when they use the courts.
PLPC Club T-Shirts: Stuart Birch from the Pro Shop displayed sample T-shirts that PLPC members can order. Available in both men’s and women’s styles, the cost is $34.00 and may be placed on member charge.
Budget Report: Treasurer Ron Scott explained the sources of the budgeted income of $7,940 and the budgeted expenses of $5,422. The anticipated balance of $2,518 is projected for the year 2018.
Ratings Committee: Member at Large Joe Nelson acknowledged the committee members: Larry Ashworth, Denise Ashworth, Dan Bergan, and Jerry Silver. In this first full year of the new ratings program, there are approximately two-thirds of the Pickleball Club members with ratings. He described how the ratings work, and how to move up or down.
Round Robins Committee: Jean Bowman, Chair of the Round Robin Committee, acknowledged the team that will be running Round Robins in 2018: Denise Ashworth, Larry Ashworth, Lynn Chamberlin, Sue Haywood, Sandy McCabe, Betty Remlinger, Susan Rubio, Jane Scott, Jim Slack, Chery West, and Keith West. Working as teams, committee members are assigned to run a particular skill level, resulting in a team running one round robin a month. She explained the Skill Level Round Robins will run from April through October this year. Typically four round robins a month are held—one for each skill level (2.0/2.5, 3.0, 3.5, 4.0+). She encouraged members to carefully check the sign-up sheet to be sure they are signing for the appropriate skill level.
Social Tournaments: Jim Robak explained the four social tournaments planned this year are for the purpose of having fun. Each tournament has a different format with players of differing abilities playing together to encourage camaraderie. The Valentine Top Hat took place in February. The upcoming Pickleball 4, a new format, is scheduled for April. Dink Fest is scheduled for July, followed by the Sunset Champagne Pickleball Poker tournament in October.
2018 Member Skill Level Tournament: Jay Davis, Tournaments Committee Vice Chair, reported that in response to membership requests, a skill-level tournament is scheduled for June 22, 23, and 24. There will be competition in Men’s Doubles, Women’s Doubles, and Mixed Doubles, with trophies being awarded in each event at each skill level.
2018 Club Championship: Jay Davis described the purpose of the Club Championship is to acknowledge the best of the best. This year’s tournament will be held September 14, 15, and 16, with events in Men’s Singles, Women’s Singles, Men’s Doubles, Women’s Doubles and Mixed Doubles. The names of winners in each event have their names displayed on the Pickleball Club Permanent Plaque in the Athletic Center.
Prescott Lakes Senior Games Pickleball Tournament: Jim Robak reported the Senior Games, sponsored by The Club at Prescott Lakes, will be held August 17, 18, and 19. It continues to enhance our reputation as one of the best pickleball tournaments around. It is a great way to support and provide exposure for The Club at Prescott Lakes. Sign-ups at www.pickleballtournaments.com open May 1, but PLPC members have access to early registration. This year, age groups 50 and 60 will have competition by skill level, with a limit of 16 teams per age/skill level. The organization meeting for this year’s event is set for May 26.
PLPC Referee Training: Randy Oaks, a USAPA certified referee, described a new program for the Prescott Lakes Pickleball Club. Upon completing a two-session training program, followed by practical court experience and an online exam, members have the opportunity to become PLPC certified referees. The first session will be held in April. Other sessions will be planned at later dates.
Lessons: Instruction Committee Co-Chair Jerry Silver introduced Bill Sneen, who described the Lessons program for the Prescott Lakes Pickleball Club. Beginner lessons are open to everyone. Novice and Advanced lessons are limited to PLPC club members. Lessons are schedule from May through September. The emphasis is on less talk and more practice. Sign-ups will be by email. Those who sign up will receive emails with links to related on-line instruction videos on the skills to be covered.
Play Schedule: Member at Large Jim Slack described the Summer Play Schedule, which took effect April 1. He emphasized the aim is to allow as much Open Play as possible in prime playing times, while allowing those who wish to improve at their skill level access to courts for that purpose.
Social Committee: Social Committee Co-Chair Betty Remlinger explained the purpose of social events is to encourage camaraderie among Pickleball Club members off the courts. She outlined four events this year that include an dinner at The Finn in January, an evening Party on the Terrace at The Club at Prescott Lakes in June, an afternoon picnic at Thumb Butte in July, and an afternoon at Granite Creek Vineyards at a date to be determined. Club members and their guests are welcome at all social events.
Court Etiquette: Vice President Peter Grant did a quick review of the rules for Open Play, Level-Based Play and Social Play, asking everyone to observe the guidelines for the benefit of everyone using the courts.
Questions and Comments: After a brief Questions and Answer session the meeting was adjourned.
