Ratings Committee: Joe Nelson introduced plans developed by the Ratings Committee. The main points are: 1) It is NOT mandatory for members to be rated; 2) Self rating is mandatory for participation in Round Robins, designated court times by skill levels and other events/activities as determined by the Board, beginning in June; 3) Self rating is also required for Intermediate and above lessons and drills. Self-ratings survey will begin in early May. Ratings will be used beginning in June, 2017.
Round Robins: Roger Breding reported Round Robins have begun and will run through October. Each sign-up sheet lists the skill level for that particular Round Robin. Beginning in June, skill level self-ratings are required. Players who win or come in second may consider moving up a level. Players scoring less than 40% for several Round Robins may consider moving down a level. Jean Bowman requested someone with Excel experience volunteer to help Jessie with the Round Robin data.
2017 Tournaments : Ben Scianna outlined the four social tournaments planned for 2017. The first event was the Winter Top Hat held March 18. The next event is the DinkFest, which is scheduled for May 20, is a double elimination tournament. With a limit of 40 players, 38 have already signed up. There will be a Sunset Champagne Pickleball Poker tournament later in the year and one more, as yet to be determined. Each tournament will have a different format with the emphasis on having fun for all skill levels. Members and non-members are encouraged to join in the After Parties for food, beverages and camaraderie.
The 4th Annual Club Championship will be held June 23, 24, and 25. Competition will be in Men’s Singles, Women’s Singles, Men’s Doubles, Women’s Doubles, and Mixed Doubles. Entry fee is $5, plus $5 per event entered. All members are encouraged to participate.
Senior Games: Vice-chair, Jay Davis provided an update of the Senior Games sponsored by The Club at Prescott Lakes, scheduled for August 18, 19, and 20. A committee made up of Jean Bowman, Joe North, Jim Robak and Jay Davis was formed to study the format of the tournament. With only 9 courts, it is difficult to organize by skill level. This year we will continue with the age format. One change will be Men’s Age 70+ will be moved to Friday evening. Sanctioning was also investigated. A benefit would be more entrants. However, since we are almost at the maximum we can handle, that may not be a benefit. It would cost the Club more so the benefits are cancelled out. The decision on which pickleball to use will be made shortly. Co-Chair Jim Robak, reported last year we had 273 players. He estimates this year it will approach 300. He encouraged the membership to sign up to play in the Senior Games and give our Club a good representation. A sign-up sheet for referees was passed around during the meeting. Jim suggested we now a minimum of 20 referees for the Senior games. A preplanning meeting will be announced soon. The Pickleball Club needs many of volunteers to make the Senior Games a success
As a side note, Jim reported the Long Range Planning Committee and the Board of Governors are looking for the Pickleball to grow to 200 members. As an incentive, Jim offered to host a dinner at the Club at Prescott Lakes to the member who brings in the most recruits. Details are to follow.
Lessons and Training: Roger Breding outlined plans for lessons. Beginner classes are available to any Athletic Club member. Membership required for Novice and Intermediate. The Instruction Committee encourages playing frequently before repeating or taking next level lessons. Intermediate and above lesson and drills will require self-rating. A player may have a Rating Committee member assess his/her level of play OR have scored 40% or more of points in an Intermediate Round Robin or a USAPA rating of 3.0 or higher. Drills are to be self-organized using the drill descriptions on the web site.
Jay Davis offered to organize Drop-in Pickleball to introduce newcomers to the basics of the game. He suggested the information be included in the weekly newsletter.
Play Schedule: Roger Breding announced the Summer Play schedule effective May 1, 2017. The schedule will be posted in the display case at the courts, emailed to the membership, and posted on the website. Social Play was defined as a time when Open Play and Skill Level play rules do not apply.
Social Committee and Events: Betty Remlinger, co-chair of the Social Committee, reported on the social events for 2017. She noted these events provide a great opportunity to get together and have fun. Club members and guests welcome. A get-together at the Prescott Breweing Company was held in February. In April, members of the Pickleball Club attended the Party on the Terrace at The Club at Prescott Lakes. An outing at Thumb Butte picnic area is planned for July. It will be pot luck, and there will be a fee. An evening at Granite Creek Winery in September 23, has been confirmed.
Court Etiquette: Jim Slack encouraged the membership to follow the rules so everyone can play and have fun. He explained Open Play, Level-Based Play and Social Play.
In Open Play it is “next players up” if two are waiting or 4 on / 4 off, if four or more players are waiting. Winners may stay on the court, but split up for next game. Any one player may stay on the court for a maximum of three consecutive games. Players are encouraged not to take advantage of players with lesser skills. For Level-Based Play (courts 1, 2, and 5), winners may stay together for a maximum of three games. Place a paddle on “fence” for next 2 up. Players may invite other skill levels to play if nobody is waiting. Social Play is the majority of the schedule and rules for Open Play and Level-based play do not apply.
Questions and Comments followed facilitated by Ben Scianna.
Jean Bowman offered that if there is enough interest, a new tee shirt order will be begun.
Roger Wolfe offered to help any group of four people improve their skills. You get your group of four together and contact him.
