April 22, 2023
1:00 P.M.
Athletic Center
The meeting was called to order at 1:00 p.m. by President Jim Slack welcoming those in attendance. He then introduced the current Board members and committee chairs.
Reports:
Membership: Secretary Genanne Davis reported the current membership at 216, an increase of 9.6% from 2022. Displaying data collected at the Front Desk through March 31, 2023, it was pointed out that out of 16 categories tallied, Pickleball ranks #7 in usage. Genanne encouraged everyone to check in at the desk every time they use the courts.
Name Tags: Sue Westbury reported that name tags are ordered using the membership application. Lost magnets can be replaced for $2.00. The vendor is local so turnaround time is short.
Club Shirts: Sue Westbury also discussed the orders through a local vendor. In the past shirts, hats, visors, and vests have been ordered. Feedback is welcome on what the members are interested in.
Absentee Voting Proposal: Ad-hoc Committee Chair Todd Tipton described how the Absentee Voting Committee came to be and what their charge was. After outlining the pros and cons of absentee voting, questions were taken from the floor. After discussion, it was voted on whether to entertain a ballot on changing the bylaws to allow absentee voting. The vote was in favor 29-11. The proposed bylaws changes were then presented to the membership and ballots were distributed.
Treasurer: Treasurer Ron Scott displayed slides for income, expenses, and balances for 2023 to date, stating the budget it pretty much on track.
Ratings: Ratings Chair Keith Stonehocker explained the work of the Ratings Committee, which is in its 8th year. There are currently 148 PLPC members with ratings. Details of how to get a rating, how to move up or down in rating were explained.
Round Robins: Speaking on behalf of Chair Cheryl West, Jim Slack thanked the volunteers who assist in managing the Round Robins. He added that meticulous records of round robin tournaments are kept to assist the Ratings Committee.
Social Tournaments: Rob Rudman described the five social tournaments in 2023 as having an emphasis on fun. Each is followed by awards and an After Party at the Club. This year’s tournaments included Shamrock Top Hat, held March 11; DinkFest, coming May 27; 3-in-1 Tournament on July 27, Sunset Champagne Pickleball Poker on October 14; and DinkFest2 on November 4.
PLPC Club Tournaments: Jim Robak described the competitive tournaments put on by the Pickleball Club including a Skill-Level Tournament scheduled for June 16, 17, and 18. There will be singles, doubles, and mixed doubles events for all levels from 2.0/2,5; 3.0, 3.5.0 and 4.0. Medals will be awarded.
The PLPC Club Championship will be held September 15, 16, 17, with men’s singles, women’s singles, men’s doubles, women’s doubles, and mixed doubles events. Winners in each category will have their name placed on a permanent plaque in the Athletic Center.
Prescott Lakes Senior Pickleball Tournament: Jim Slack discussed the 10th year of the tournament sponsored by The Club at Prescott Lakes and the Prescott Lakes Pickleball Club on August 25, 26, 27. Randy Oaks is the Tournament Director and Bill Ooms is Head Referee. Sign up this year will be at
www.pickleballbrackets.com or www.pickleballtournaments.com. Registration begins May 7 at noon and a discount is offered for PLPC Members only. This is a fully sanctioned tournament. A request for volunteers will be made to the PLPC membership.
Referee Training: Jim Slack reported The Club Championship, Skill Level Tournament and the Senior Pickleball Tournament all require referees. There are three ways to become a referee: 1) Prescott Pickleball Association offers referee training; 2) the PLPC will offer training if enough people indicate interest; 3) USAPA website offers a 6-hour training course.
Lessons: Speaking for Lessons Committee Chair Jenny Douglas, Jim Robak reported lessons began in May and run through September. All lessons sign-ups are through SignUp Genius. Beginner Lessons are free to all members of the Club at Prescott Lakes. All other lessons are available only to PLPC members. Junior Pickleball lessons will be offered in the summer for one week, Monday through Thursday.
Play Schedule: Jim Slack informed members that plaques have been placed at each court explaining the Play Schedule for that court.
Social Committee: Chair Cintia Jarrett described the three events for 2023—A Taste of Mexico, May 6; Italian Night, September 27, and the PLPC Holiday Mixer, December 9.
Court Etiquette: Todd Tipton reminded members the court schedule for each court is posted at that court. If the designated players are not using it, the court is open to anyone. If the designated players need another player, even if you are not at that level, you may answer their invitation to join them.
Membership Enrichment: Rob Rudman outlined some of the benefits members receive from their annual dues: all social tournament buffets are subsidized; umbrella stands, paddle holders, pickleball holders at the courts; donations on behalf of PLPC; discounted early registration for the Senior games; voting on bylaws changes.
Proposed Bylaws Change Voting Results: Jim Slack announced the result of the vote on the proposed bylaws change. By a vote of 33 – 6, the proposed bylaws changes were accepted.
Adjournment: The meeting was adjourned at 2:30 p.m.
Respectfully submitted,
Genanne Davis, Secretary
